Chapter History
In the spring of 2010, a group of young ladies from Texas Tech University set out to find an organization that showcased their individuality while providing a sense of community. At the same time, the formation of a strong friendship with the men of Sigma Lambda Beta – Epsilon Beta Chapter- gave rise to the idea of establishing the interest group Women Interested in Sigma Lambda Gamma (WISLG) with the aspiration of becoming a Sigma Lambda Gamma chapter in the future. As a group, they continued to research and ask questions regarding Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc., while recruiting the girls who would bring their perseverance, dedication, and willingness to work towards the cause of becoming a Sigma Lambda Gamma colony.
The support and guidance granted from the Texas Tech Greek advisor, Allen Sutton, was greatly appreciated. An organization at Texas Tech University saw our determined young ladies striving to surpass all obstacles in our way and was willing to push us forward by offering words of wisdom and the tools necessary to begin to deteriorate our monetary burden. The multicultural organization, “Unidos por un Mismo Idioma,” handed us our first projects- a car wash and a date auction- which made us understand the true meaning of hard work and coming together as one to complete a goal. All our financial needs were attained through the collaboration of every member. Through hard work and dedication Women Interested in Sigma Lambda Gamma was recognized by the Greek Council, became an established Organization at Texas Tech University, and received great admiration from the Lubbock community through our countless services.
Seeing as there is no end to the amount of service needed by the community, WISLG has continued to participate in any project thrown its way. Some of these projects include assisting The Lubbock Animal Shelter, completing Relay for Life, helping the Earth with Arbor Day, building a home for the less fortunate with Habitat for Humanity, appraising for Destination Imagination for the Lubbock Independent School District, embracing Latino culture by assisting with the Miss Latina Lubbock Pageant, and reaching out to the young by tutoring at our local schools. Constant dedication to aid the community has allowed WISLG members to form strong friendships with each other and has created a sisterly bond that drives them to continue their journey towards becoming an established colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma on the grounds of Texas Tech University. This drive will not be diminished as demonstrated by the aforementioned activities. This group of young, determined ladies is willing to overcome any obstacles thrown their way. We are recognized as Women Interested in Women Sigma Lambda Gamma, not only because of our interest to the nationally recognized sorority Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc., but because of our commitment and dedication to our school, community, and Greek Council.
