Philanthropies
The Texas Tech Colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma supports the TRIO programs and what they stand for. These programs are based on supporting the education of individuals who are unable to afforded it and financial assistance to further their education. These programs have become stepping-stones for many students within our community who have benefited and continued on to a secondary education. Our country has made a commitment to providing educational opportunities for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance. In support of this commitment, Congress established a series of programs to help low-income Americans enter college. These programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as the TRIO Programs. Financial aid programs help students overcome financial roadblocks to higher education. But TRIO programs help students overcome class, social, and cultural barriers to higher education.
The Texas Tech University Sigma Lambda Gamma Colony actively supports the important issue of Breast Cancer Awareness. Our colony support comes in many approaches: from fundraising campaigns, workshops to implement awareness, participation in run/walk events. The main foundation that our colony supports is The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The foundation of Susan G. Komen is dedicated to education and research about causes, treatment, and the search for a cure. Our colony is in the works of establishing an annual fall semester Susan G. Komen week. The week includes implementing table set-ups in the Sub/Union and passing out breast cancer information as well as taking donations to help the cause. As a colony we are also launching a Komen Pink Sale as well as a Komen Pink Passion function where all the proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. If your are interested in participating in our Texas Tech Komen Pink Passion function or looking to donate to the cause, please contact any Sigma Lambda Gamma member to obtain more information.
